Daily Lathe Maintenance Routine

Most lathe breakdowns aren't sudden. They're the result of the same small things being skipped for months.

A lathe that's checked every day rarely fails without warning. Most of what causes emergency repairs — worn ways, seized components, burnt-out motors — shows early signs that a two-minute daily check would have caught. Here's a routine your operators can actually stick to.

Every day, before starting

• Wipe down the bed, ways, and chuck — swarf and chips left overnight cause corrosion and scoring when the carriage runs over them.
• Check the oil level in the headstock and apron sight glasses — top up if low, and investigate if it's dropping faster than usual.
• Check for coolant level and condition if the machine uses it — old, contaminated coolant does more harm than none at all.
• Listen for unusual noise on start-up — grinding, knocking, or a whine that wasn't there yesterday.
• Check belts for visible cracking, fraying, or looseness.

Every day, after finishing

• Clean off all swarf and chips before switching off — don't leave it for tomorrow.
• Return the carriage to a neutral position and back off the tool from the workpiece.
• Wipe exposed ways with a light film of oil if the machine will sit idle overnight, to prevent corrosion.

Every week

• Grease all lubrication points per the machine's schedule — don't rely on "it still moves fine" as a sign it doesn't need it.
• Check tailstock alignment and that it locks securely.
• Inspect cutting tools and inserts for wear that's affecting finish quality.
• Check that all guards and safety interlocks are in place and working.

Every month

• Check spindle alignment and run-out with a test bar.
• Inspect electrical connections, terminals, and the condition of the main power cable.
• Check gearbox oil (if separate from the headstock) and top up or change per the manufacturer's schedule.
• Review the machine's downtime log, if you keep one — repeated small stoppages on the same component are an early warning, not a coincidence.

Why this is worth the discipline

A machine that goes down unplanned costs you in three places at once: the repair itself, the idle operator, and the order you can't fill on time. A daily routine that takes five minutes is cheaper than any of those, every time.
