Manual vs CNC: Which Do You Need?

Neither is "better." One fits your job mix; the other doesn't.

This comes up on almost every machine sales call: should you buy manual or CNC? The honest answer depends on what you actually run through the machine week to week — not on which sounds more modern.

Manual lathes

• The operator controls every cut by hand — feed, speed, depth all set and adjusted on the fly.
• Best for one-off jobs, repairs, and low-volume work where every part is a little different.
• Lower purchase cost, and any competent machinist can run it without specialised programming training.
• Slower for repeat parts, and precision depends heavily on the individual operator's skill that day.

CNC lathes

• The machine follows a stored program — once set, it repeats the same cut to the same tolerance, part after part.
• Best for batch production, tight tolerances, and complex geometry that's difficult to hold by hand.
• Higher upfront cost, and you need someone who can program and set up the machine, not just operate it.
• Less flexible for genuine one-offs — programming a single unusual part can take longer than just turning it manually.

The real decision factors

1. Batch size. If you're making 1–5 of something, manual is usually faster start-to-finish. At 20+ identical parts, CNC starts winning on time and consistency.
2. Repeatability requirements. Automotive and precision engineering clients who need every part identical are a CNC case. General fabrication and repair work is usually a manual case.
3. Skilled labour on your floor. A CNC machine sitting idle because nobody can program it is a worse outcome than a manual lathe running every day.

Most Nigerian workshops run both

A common, sensible setup is one or two manual lathes for repair and general work, plus a CNC lathe reserved for the batch or precision jobs that justify it. You don't have to choose one philosophy for the whole floor.
